UI Technical Lead Engineer

Zoosk – San Francisco, CA

In my current position I am a lead in terms of technical expertise rather than management. After serving as an interim feature team manager, I have resumed my focus of building UI with HTML and CSS. I have been learning JavaScript and AngularJS over the last several months and have not only resolved some JavaScript-related tickets but also completed two small features involving both JavaScript and Angular.

All my various positions at Zoosk have allowed me to collaborate across teams. I work with the design team and product management to clarify requirements and brainstorm on UI improvements that balance design integrity and code efficiency. I also work with JavaScript developers to ensure the HTML and CSS integrate well with their implementation.

I have also participated in our internal hackathons. I was on a team that won second place as well as People's Choice, and in a later hackathon I was on a team that won an honorable mention. Also, one of my product ideas was approved by our Sparks panel that reviews all in-house submissions for product improvement.

Interim Revenue Feature Team Lead

Zoosk – San Francisco, CA

In August 2015 Zoosk reorganized its engineering teams for business reasons, resulting in the reassignments of my direct reports to new feature-driven teams. I became the designated UI engineer for the Revenue Team reporting to another engineer. Three months after this reorganization, the Revenue Team leader resigned, and I stepped in as the team's interim manager. My new responsibilities overlapped those of my UI Lead Engineer position, but new experiences included the following:

  • Work with our team's product manager to prioritize ticket assignments and formulate solutions to smaller projects
  • Work with the head of client applications, QA, and the build and release team to coordinate production deploys from my team
  • Monitor our bi-weekly sprint deploys for any issues
  • Document changes to be deployed at the end of our sprints

April 2015 - August 2015

UI Lead Engineer

Zoosk – San Francisco, CA

I was promoted to the UI team lead position. I continued to build and maintain interfaces with HTML and CSS, but I also managed two other UI developers on the team. New experiences I took on in this position are as follows:

  • Plan/schedule each upcoming sprint's workload for the UI team. This involved coordination with both our web and mobile touch teams and their assigned product managers.
  • Attend all feature kickoffs to stay aware of the product pipeline and scope
  • Provide project updates to the head of client applications
  • Code review some of the team's UI work and recommend improvements
  • Meet with team members each week to check in on their professional development and any concerns
  • Reviewed team members' performances

As UI Developer I use HTML, SCSS, and CSS in the Zoosk web and responsive mobile touch products. My focuses are as follows:

  • Build and test interfaces for new product features based off mocks from our design team
  • Build and test redesigns of existing features

  • Identify opportunities to pattern design components to expedite development and improve maintenance
